IN December 2018, ROTOCON’s Johannesburg branch took delivery of a state-of-the-art Haas VF3 CNC centre that automatically finishes rotary dies, ensuring a perfect cutting edge 100% of the time.

In addition to improving quality by eliminating possible human error in hand sharpening, the CNC centre speeds up resharpening time and improves cutting edge accuracy. It also opens up die-making opportunities for different markets beyond the labelling industry, explains director, Patrick Aengenvoort.

The project kicked off last August when Rotocon compared machine specs from a number of CNC suppliers. According to Patrick, Haas offered the best value package for their needs, offering high accuracy and speed plus a 1.16m machine bed size (others offered bed sizes between 700 and 800mm).

As the industry invests in wider web presses, Patrick adds, Rotocon is moving to service converters’ needs. The CNC centre capabilities are backed up by Haas’ excellent local technical team, training infrastructure and spares.
